Environmental Issues

LEAD-BASED PAINT
  • Many homes and condominiums built before 1978 have lead-based paint. Paint that has chipped or is deteriorating, or on surfaces that rub together such as windows and doors, creates lead dust which can pose serious health hazards to occupants and visitors. Information regarding lead-based paint can be obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) real estate disclosure website.

ASBESTOS
  • There are several kinds of asbestos fibers, all of which are fire resistant and not easily destroyed or degraded. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports asbestos has been found to cause cancer of the lung and stomach according to studies of workers and others exposed to asbestos. It has been used in a wide variety of household products such as appliances, ceilings, wall and pipe coverings, floor tiles, roofing and siding materials. Further information can be found on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s website.
RADON
  • The Alabama Department of Public Health has advised that Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas that occurs naturally in most rocks and soil. It is produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. Radon is harmlessly dispersed in outdoor air, but when trapped in buildings can increase the risk of lung cancer especially at elevated levels.
  • To protect you and your family, download (PDF) and read A Citizen’s Guide to Radon produced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
  • While we have tried to give information on more general and known environmental concerns here, this list is not all-inclusive. Other, more individual, matters to research may include underground storage tanks, mold, methamphetamine production, groundwater contamination, etc.
RESOURCES
  • The Alabama Department of Public Health's website can provide some valuable insight into various environmental matters. Also, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's website contains a significant amount of information as well.
